Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo was the talk of training camp with his new facemask, inspired by the most recent “Batman” movie.
The NFL wasn’t as thrilled.
The league has banned non-standard facemasks, including Orakpo’s, unless the player has a specific medical reason for wearing one. Orakpo said that in addition to the look, the mask helps because it is harder for offensive linemen to get their fingers inside his mask.
“It’s kind of tough because obviously it is different, and it does have a sort of look – appeal – to it,” he said. “But it’s also for protection as well, man. We’re supposed to be all about protection, then they deny something that benefits us. It’s something that’s kind of disheartening.”
Orakpo said he’s trying to work with the league to get the mask approved in time for the regular season. He wore a traditional facemask during Thursday’s preseason game at Tennessee.
